The Last Deployment: How a Gay, Hammer-Swinging...

In 2003, after serving five and a half years as a carpenter in a North Dakota National Guard engineer unit, Bronson Lemer was ready to leave the military behind. But six months short of completing his commitment to the army, Lemer was deployed on a yearlong tour of duty to Iraq. Leaving college life behind in the Midwest, he yearns for a lost love and quietly dreams of a future as an openly gay man outside the military. He discovers that his father´s lifelong example of silent strength has taught him much about being a man, and these lessons help him survive in a war zone and to conceal his sexuality, as he is required to do by the U.S. military. The Last Deployment is a moving, provocative chronicle of one soldier´s struggle to reconcile military brotherhood with self-acceptance. Lemer captures the absurd nuances of a soldier´s daily life: growing a mustache to disguise his fear, wearing pantyhose to battle sand fleas, and exchanging barbs with Iraqis while driving through Baghdad. But most strikingly, he describes the poignant reality faced by gay servicemen and servicewomen, who must mask their identities while serving a country that disowns them. Often funny, sometimes anguished, The Last Deployment paints a deeply personal portrait of war in the 21st century. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Kevin Pierce. Pollock (Special Edition)

Jay Quinn´s Lambda-nominated novels transcend the traditional gay novel, exploring universal issues of marriage, aging parents, addiction, and attraction, all while presenting unique characters and pause-register drama. In Metes and Bounds, surf, sand, and sex meet in the macho world of construction workers. For narrator Matt, ´´the greatest comfort of surfing comes in the sureness and instinct.´´ Matt is not just coming of age, he´s coming out, and in the sun-bleached world of the North Carolina beaches his burgeoning sexuality can toss as many curves as a wave. Through his longings and self-discovery, Matt knows he cannot let others triumph over being the man he knows to be. As he says, ´´Being a surfer meant you got out, faced your own fears, and did it.´´ So too does Matt, in this stirring, memorable novel. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Fred Blogs. A book for this moment: Both an assessment of our current political leadership and a vision of those who can bring substantive change. Who are the new progressive leaders emerging to lead the post-Trump return to democracy in America? National political correspondent and award-winning author D.D. Guttenplan´s The Next Republic is an extraordinarily intense and wide-ranging account of the recent fall and incipient rise of democracy in America. The Next Republic profiles nine successful activists who are changing the course of American history right now: ? new labor activist and author Jane McAlevey ? racial justice campaigner (and mayor of Jackson, Mississippi) Chokwe Antar Lumumba ? environmental activist (and newly elected chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party) Jane Kleeb ? Chicago´s first openly gay Latino public official Carlos Ramirez-Rosa ? #ALLOFUS co-founder Waleed Shahid ? young architects of Bernie Sanders amazing rise, digerati Corbin Trent and Zack Exley, founders of Brand New Congress ? and author and anti-corruption crusader Zephyr Teachout. Additionally, the introduction to The Next Republic ties in the election and first year of the Trump presidency to the current rise of populism of the left, and there are three historical chapters that describe key moments in American history that shed light on current events: the Whiskey Rebellion, the Lincoln Republic, and the Roosevelt Republic. Guttenplan understands the magnitude of the problem of democracy, and at the same time the great possibilities for its resurgence. Like a cross between George Packer´s The Unwinding and John F. Kennedy´s Profiles in Courage, The Next Republic is both unyielding and deeply hopeful, the first book to come out of the Trump ascendency that stakes a claim for seeing beyond it.
